Dare to be Drug Free!

Red Ribbon Week continues! The 5th graders had Dare today. Look for information about the DARE graduation to come home soon. Tomorrow is wear Red day!

To Smart To Start Tuesday

Some parents have parent/teacher conferences tomorrow.

Language Arts
We took a vocabulary quiz over part 2 of Maniac Magee. We read chapters 39-42. In today's chapters, Maniac was confronted with some very bad stereotypes. He found it upsetting (so did the class). Will he find a way to bring the town of Two Mills together and teach them that people are more the same than different? If anyone can do it, Maniac can! We will finish the book tomorrow. Final test is on Thursday.

Math
Today we reviewed 4th and 5th grade skills and practiced algebra by playing a game called first to 100. It required students to replace a variable in a problem with the product of two dice. Homework is math box 4.6 and study link 4.6. Test on Thursday.

No science today.
Instead we went to a Red Ribbon Assembly and a party for the end of fall fundraisers. Ask your child who was there!

Thank you for your contributions to PTO. We appreciate all you do!

Marvelous Monday

We had a great day. Don't forget tomorrow is workout gear day. Wear your sweat to school to support a healthy, drug-free lifestyle!

Language Arts
We had a very, very busy day! We read chapters 33-38 in Maniac Magee and did the worksheets. We went to IMC to check out books. Then we came back to the room to start writing a persuasive essay about not doing drugs. Today we filled out a graphic organizer and then wrote a rough draft. Homework is whatever didn't get done in class.

Test Alert: It looks like the final test over Maniac Magee witll be on Thursday! There may be a vocabulary test and another section quiz before Thursday.

Math
Today we did lesson 4.5. We worked on division word problems and what to do with those pesky remainders. Sometimes you get to ignore them. Sometimes you round them up to the next whole number and sometimes you report them as a decimal or a fraction. It all depends on what the problem is asking. Homework is studylink 4.5

Test Alert: The Unit 4 test will be on Thursday!

Science
Today we read about scientific inquiry and several different scientists. No homework!

Bus Safety Day!!

What a wonderful day!

Language Arts - We reviewed language arts skills and then read chapters 25-27 in Maniac Magee. It seems that Maniac has found another family. We then did the worksheets for those chapters and worked on the following vocabulary from the book: mosey, prompt, abruptly, blarney, coot, grouse, mangled, portable, knack, and orneriest. There will be a quiz coming up soon!
We went to music and gym today. By the way - Students will have a music test next Thursday. They have a review sheet that they should be studying.

Math - Today we practiced dividing with decimals. Please remember that it doesn't matter to me what type of division you do. We also made magnitude estimates to help us figure out where the decimals end up. Homework is Study Link 4.4 and it is exactly what we did in class this morning. Remember that each problem requires you to do three things: 1. write a number model that shows how you can estimate the answer 2. Circle the place value the answer is and 3. Actually solve the problem.

Bus Safety - Today we watched a video about how to behave on the bus and what to do in case of an emergency. We then practiced exiting the bus in a safe manner.

Upcoming events
Next week is Red Ribbon Week. We will be doing special things all week long to help us remember to Say No to Drugs.
Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, October 28 in the afternoon and evening.

Science
Welcome back, Homeroom!! Today we started our science unit on variables. We made a pendulum and counted how many cycles the pendulum would swing in 15 seconds. We then brainstormed changes we could make to the pendulum in order to change our results. We will try these out at our next science class. (Tomorrow we have DARE)

Next week is Red Ribbon Week! Look for more information to be coming home soon.

Mellow Monday

This week is off to a quiet start. How many people stayed up to watch the Bears game?

LA
Today we read chapters 15-18 in Maniac Magee. We had some interesting discussions on various literary devices. Today's chapters dealt quite a bit with stereotypes and prejudices. The students had plenty of time to work on their worksheets. However, if worksheets 15-18 aren't done, they are homework. Tomorrow we are going to read chapters 19-21 and then we will have a quiz over chapters 12-21. Vocab quiz will be on Wednesday.

We also worked on our candy writing.

Math
Today we started working with division. Our focus today was on friendly numbers. For example: If you needed to divide 71 by 5, you could think of the 71 as 50 +21. Then you could divide 5 into 50 (10) and 5 into 21 (4 r.1) and come up with your answer of 14 with a remainder of 1. We played a game called division dash. Homework is journal pages 104 - 105 as well as study link 4.1

Health
Today was Mrs. Woods's class last day for this rotation. We worked on a cooperative learning task to demonstrate abstract thinking. No homework.

Monday's News

Cooler Weather is here. Make sure your child dress appropriately!

LA
: We had a great morning! We started our first novel study for the year. We have chosen to read and study the novel, Maniac Magee. We will be completing almost all of the reading in class, due to some high maturity content. The book is filled with issues like race, segregation and peer issues. We have found that we can all handle these topics a lot better when we are able to talk them through as a class. We read through chapter 1 today and had some great discussions. We were able to incorporate skills such as similes, self vs. man conflict, foreshadowing, symbolism and metaphors...all in the first chapter! I'm so anxious to continue with this great learning tool in the next few weeks! There shouldn't have been any homework today unless someone didn't finish what we did in class!

Even though we don't have a story this week...we still have RIT words. They are:
  • Plot line-the order in which things happen in a story
  • Allusion-A reference to a familiar person, place, thing or event
  • Anecdote-The use of a short story to make a point
  • End Rhyme-A rhyme that occurs in the last syllable in a line of poetry
  • Lyric-A short poem that could be put to music
  • Meter-The rhythm of a poem
Math
Today we worked hard on figuring out the total measure of angles in a polygon. We discovered that all triangles add up to 180 degrees and that we can use that knowledge to help us figure out other shapes. Homework: Pages 92-94 in the journal and then studylink 3.9

Health
Today we continued to look at the changes brought on by adolcencense. We read lessons 5 and 6 in chapter 2. Tomorrow we will do the chapter review and we will have the test on Thursday.

Don't forget to bring in those boxtops.
Also Don't forget that Wednesday is Pajama Day! Bring in a donation to help support cancer research.

Monday's News

Welcome back to school everyone! We are still collecting boxtops for a couple of more weeks.

Language Arts
Today we reviewed Language Arts skills for morning work. We took our spelling pretest over compound words. We introduced this weeks vocabulary words -, injury, slurp, mournful, shrieks, sympathy, decency, delivering, and bulletin board and reviewed this week's skill - idioms. We also talked about our comprehension skill- making inferences. You make an inference by taking what the author tells you and adding in what you know to come up with new information that the author does not tell you. We read this week's story, Shiloh.

Our RIT words include:
Point of view - The person telling the story.
Personification - Giving a non-human object human like qualities. The door stood guard over the meeting.
Plot - The events in a story.
Blank Verse - An un-rhymed poem with regular rhythm.
First Person - When the narrator of the story is also the main character. Shiloh is told in first person because Marty is the narrator and the main character.

We also went to the library today and Mrs. Slater stopped by to teach us about conflict resolution. Our focus today was on I-messages. The kids should have brought home a letter about this today.

Math
Today we used a compass to solve measuring problems. We also learned about adjacent, vertical, and straight angles. Homework is math boxes and study link 3.5.

Health
We talked about the major changes a family can go through and how families need to support each other during those changes. Homework is Lesson checkup 2.1 numbers 1-4.
