Wow Wednesday

We had a great day!!
Language Arts~
We started out our day in the computer lab on Odyssey.  This was the first time that we had been able to use the computer for a while so it was fun.  We came back to class and reviewed future tense verbs and discussed object, subject, and reflexive pronouns in grammar.  We sorted our spelling words by ending.  We visited with our reading buddies.  We partner read The Blind Hunter and had a marathon writing session.  We also had vocab vine.  Our root for the day was dict and it means speak or say.

Math~
Today we compared and ordered fractions.  We talked about how if the numerator of the fractions are the same then the smaller the denominator the smaller the fraction.  We also discussed if the denominator of the fractions are the same then the larger the numerator the larger the fraction.  HW: math boxes and studly link 7.8

Science (Woods)~
We had two focuses today.  1.  How can we measure the force of two magnets?  2.  How can we prove that the force of attraction between two magnets decreases as the distance between the magnet increases?  We set up a balance and counted the number of washers it took to pull two magnets apart. Eventually we used spacers to add distance between the magnets.  We discovered that as the number of spacers increased, the number of washers it took to break the force decreased.   No homework.

LanguageArts~
First the good news (at least according to the kids), due to the shortened week, we will not have weekly homework this week.  We will still have a spelling test on Friday.  All students should have a list in their folders.
This week we are reading the story "The Blind Hunter."  Our vocabulary focus is on word families - words that share the same base word. Cautiously, faint, disguised, crisscrossed, wisdom, fade and jealousy are our vocabulary words.  Our comprehension skill is drawing conclusions.  You can help us learn this skill by discussing what the author is not telling us.
Today we went to gym.  Then we took our spelling pretest.  The list is hard this week.  Please spend 10 minutes a night reviewing words.  We talked about pronouns.  Today we discussed 3 different types of pronouns: subject, object and reflexive.  Grammar test will be on Thursday.  We previewed comprehension and vocabulary for the story.  We listened to the story on CD.   We also did a 10 minute marathon writing session.  We had vocabulary vine today.  We learned that pre means before or in front of.

Math~
Today we reviewed making equivalent fractions.  We also worked on turning simple fractions into decimals.  Today's homework is math boxes and study link 7.8 and anything that didn't get done in class.

Science (Grannan)~

Tuesday.....

Language Arts~
Today we went to PE.  We came back to class and reviewed past tense verbs and pronouns.  Today we learned about antecedents and pronouns.  The antecedent is the noun that the pronoun refers to.  We sorted spelling words by how the ending was added.  We read Dear Mrs. LaRue together and drew conclusions about Ike.  We also did the questions at the end of the story together in class.  One part of homework done!  In vocabulary vine we started unit 5.  There will be a quiz on Friday!

Here is this week's RIT words.....
Omniscient - having total knowledge of something.
Persona - A voice or character representing the speaker in a literary work
Preposition - Words that show position or direction and introduce prepositional phrases.
Scansion - The analysis of verse into metrical patterns.
Stereotype - A simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group. (Boys like trucks, girls like dolls)

Math~
Today we used pattern blocks to help us understand addition and subtraction of fractions. Mathboxes and study link 7.5 are homework.

Science~
Today we explored different forces associated with magnets.  We learned that magnets attract and repel other magnets.   We also learned that a force is a push or pull.  No homework.

Back to the Winter Wonderland

I hope everyone had a great weekend playing in the snow.

Homeroom~
Could you check and see if you have received the NP newsletter?  Send me an email if you haven't gotten one in the last week or so and I will make sure that your email is added to the list.  You may want to check spam and junk mail folders as well...

Language Arts~
This week we are reading "Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School."  Anyone who has a dog that makes bad choices can identify with this story about a dog with an excuse for everything.  Our comprehension skills for the week are generating questions and drawing conclusions.  Our vocabulary for the week includes these words: neglected, appreciated, risks, bluffing, misunderstood, desperate, endured, and obedience.  Our vocabulary skill is prefixes.  Our spelling words focus on endings and our grammar skill is pronouns.  I will add our RIT words tomorrow.

There is homework this week.  Check those backpacks.  Book orders are due tomorrow.

Math~
Today our skill was probability.  We discussed how likely we were to pull certain cards from a deck of cards.  We learned that we can express the probability mathematically as a fraction by putting the number of desirable outcomes over the number of possible outcomes.

Homework was study link and math boxes 7.3.  Only a few students were still working on this at then end of class

Science (Grannan)~
Today we cleaned up some left over science morning work packets.  We will get back to magnets on Wednesday.

No homework.

Thursday's News and Notes

Language Arts~
We stared off our day by going to music.  We came back to the room and took our grammar test over irregular verbs.  The we started reviewing concepts.  After reading "Snowflake Bently," we got together in small groups and discussed the author's purpose and possible themes of the story.  The we reviewed our vocabulary words and discussed different words that have multiple meanings and how we can figure out what those words mean.  Context is key, we discovered.  We also worked on our character sketches and handwriting.  We finished up our vocabulary unit and studied unit 4 (My Bad is the title) for the quiz tomorrow.  We need to know the meaning of the roots and we also need to know the bold vocabulary on the front page.
Book orders went home today.  They are due on Tuesday, January 11th.
Tomorrow is assessment day.  Be prepared.

Math ~
Today we worked together to explore how fractions change when the whole changes. We used the overhead and different patten blocks to help us.
HW:  Math Boxes and Study Link 7.4

Science~
Science was fun today.  We got to experiment with magnets.  We learned vocabulary: attract, repel, and force.    We learned that magnets are only attracted to iron and steel.  We learned that some rocks are magnetic because of the high level of iron in them.
No homework.

Wax Museum Wednesday

We had a great day!

Language Arts~
We were pretty excited about our wax museum today!  We started the day off with a little grammar review and a review of the meaning of our spelling words.  We worked on our handwriting book.  All cursive, all the time is right around the corner.  We had our Wax Museum.  I was very proud of the job that our kids did.  They had excellent behavior and excellent reports!  We worked on our vocabulary packets.  Don't forget they are due tomorrow and there will be a quiz on Friday.

Math~
Today we worked on fraction of problems.  For example 3/5 of 35 = ?.  The easiest way to solve this problem is to divide by the denominator and then multiply your answer by the numerator. Using our example, first you would divide 55 by 5 and get 7.  Then, you would multiply the 7 by 3 and get 21.  So 3/5 of 35 = 21.
HW:  Math boxes and study link 7.2

Art Smart~
A wonderful thank you to our moms for helping us create our original works of art.  The art turned out beautifully!  Thanks Moms...
