Welcome to the new year!

I hope everyone had a great winter break!  It was wonderful to spend some time with friends and family and just to relax!

It is going to be a very busy week!
My homeroom is going to the planetarium tomorrow.  We will be out of the building from 10:10 to about 11:40 or so tomorrow.  On Friday my language arts class will be going to the South Bend Regional Art Museum.  See note for more details.  Friday's field trip will need a few chaperones.  :)

Language Arts~
Today we started our new novel study.  We will be spending the next few weeks reading My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.  It is the story of a young boy who runs away to live in the mountains.  Students will have a vocabulary quiz over 10 self-chosen words on Wednesday, January 11th.  They also have a packet to work on that covers the author's preface and  chapters 1 and 2.  The packet is due tomorrow.  We will have a spelling test on Friday as well as a grammar test on linking verbs.
HW:  Packet, study for spelling test and for vocab quiz.

Math~
We pretested unit 7 skills today.  Our focus will be on exponents, scientific notation, and positive and negative numbers.

Science (Woods)~
We started a new chapter today. We are learning about weather and how the water cycle can affect the weather.  Today we learned about the atmosphere and the 4 ways it helps support life.  We also learned about how the 4 properties of air can help us predict the weather.
