Science~
Today we learned about how real life scientist use the properties of matter to predict and prevent avalanches. We also reviewed vocabulary and the properties of matter. Don't forget test next Thursday!

Science Expo~
Don't forget that all Science Expo projects and abstracts are due next Monday.  Expo projects will be presented to Language Arts classes for a speaking and listening grade.  Abstracts will be turned into the science teacher for a science grade.

Back to Normal Today....

Today was a normal schedule kind of day.  :)

HW:  Math boxes and study link 7.5

Science~
Today we opened our physical science books for the first time.  We learned that everything that takes up space and has mass is made of matter. We also talked about how the properties of matter can help us identify it.  The properties include shape, color, odor, taste, texture, hardness, volume, mass, and attraction to magnets.  Pick an object and have your student describe it using the properties.  Or you could describe and object using the properties and have your child guess the object.

HW:  Finish Venn Diagram.  Due Friday.

Twisted Schedule Tuesday

Tomorrow it is back to our regularly scheduled programs.  Today was another mixed up day.

We started with specials.  Then we had language arts.  We sorted spelling words by the soft c/soft g sound.  We then had Vocab Vine.  Today our focus was on the suffix able (able to) and the prefix re- (again, back)  Then we were off to content!

Students took a pretest and a post test over the program. These tests will not count on their report cards. It was for the planetarium use. We didn't even get the tests back.

Math~
Our focus today continued to be fractions.  In order to understand fractions we have to understand what the whole or one represents.  1/2 does not mean the same thing in all situations.  We used pattern blocks to demonstrate this idea.  We didn't finish the lesson.

HW:  None

Language Arts~
We reviewed our spelling worksheet.  We worked on helping and main verbs in Grammar.  We partner read the story and then filled out a Venn diagram together.  We looked for ways that the two organizations mentioned in the article were the same and different.

Math~
Our focus was on probability.  We wrote the probability something would happen as a fraction.  Favorable outcomes were the numerator and all outcomes were the denominator.  For example:  If I was trying to figure out the probability that I would draw a heart from a deck of cares the fraction would be 13/52.  That event is unlikely.

HW:  Study Link and Math Boxes 7.3

Language Arts~
Our Story this week is "Kid Reporters at Work."  We are working on comparing and contrasting the information in the article.  The author's organization plan is also compare and contrast.  Look for key words that show the compare and contrast framework.  Our story vocabulary is identified, enterprising, persistence, venture.  In grammar, we are working with helping verbs.  In spelling, we are focused on soft c and soft g sounds.
