A new year, a new commitment to blogging! I hope that everyone enjoyed their winter break. It was great to see all of the smiling faces this morning. We jumped right back into learning!
Language Arts~
We are using the green reading books again. Our story this week is "My Brother, Martin." It is a story written about Martin Luther King, Jr. by his older sister. Our comprehension focus is on author's purpose. We are using clues from the story to help us figure out if the author is trying to inform us about something or persuade us that their opinion is the right one. Our vocabulary words are unfair, ancestors, numerous, segregation, unsuspecting, avoided, and injustice. Our vocabulary skill is prefixes and how that changes the meanings of words. Remember that these words and skills will be tested on Friday. Our common core words are
Salutation - The greeting in a business letter
Complimentary closing - The ending of a business letter
appositive - renaming a noun with another noun. (my dog, Sadie)
anecdote - a short story told to prove a point.
appendix - An added part at the end of the book that gives more information about something.
assumptions - What some one believes to be true.
HW: Weekly homework is due on Friday. Please remember that students are to study spelling words, read the story out loud and answer the think and compare questions. Read the short one page article and answer the questions on the back. All reading counts toward the 20 minutes.
Math~
I graded the unit 6 test over break. Today we reviewed the test and went over all the answers. Students also practiced similar test questions. Students will do an independent activity with similar questions tomorrow.
HW: Finish and then study the unit 6 review.
Science~
Today we played Life Science Jeopardy. We reviewed major life science concepts by playing a jeopardy like game.
HW: None!
