I hope everyone had a great weekend. We are off to another fine week at Northpoint.
Don't forget that your fundraiser items are due today. Please make your collections and return them to Northpoint as soon as possible.
Those students who want to be considered for WSTAR need to turn in their applications and letters by Friday, September 12.
Mrs. Stephen has reminded the students two days in a row about behavior in the cafeteria. Please discuss with your child STAR behavior in the cafeteria. Remember STAR is Safe, trustworthy, accountable, and respectful behavior. It is always expected of students at Northpoint.
Language Arts
Today we discussed conjunctions and complex sentences. We also learned about independent and dependent clauses. We took our spelling pretest. We discussed our new vocabulary and our reading strategy. This week we will be looking at character traits, actions, and speech and making inferences about that character. You can help out at home by discussing characters on TV or in books that you are reading and describing what kind of people they are and how do you know. We also worked on using imagery in our writing.
Homework: Here are the expectations for Fluency and Flow for the week.
Part 1: Read the story aloud to an adult and get their signature.
Part 2: Answer the questions on page 101 about the story.
Part 3: Do the work out loud with an adult. Adult signature is all that I need.
Part 4. Choose one character on the back of the parent letter and write 5 sentences about them. The sentences should focus on them as characters. Include descriptions, character traits and actions.
Part 5: (optional) Do the write about project on page 100
ISTEP Update
ISTEP starts next Tuesday. From Tuesday to Friday, students will be in theri language arts class. We are looking for 4 volunteer parents to send in healthy snacks for the class. Each volunteer would need to supply a healthy snack for 23 kids. Thanks for considering it!
Math
We worked on place value, facts, and patterns. We also practiced adding by 9, 19, and 99. The key is to add 10 (or a multiple of 10) and then subtract 1. We began our new unit, estimation and computation, today. Today we reviewed addition of whole numbers and decimals.
Homework: Students need to finish a 4 page packet.
My homeroom had their first Social Studies lesson today. Check out Mrs. Suddarth's blog for details.
Science
Mrs. Woods class and I investigated magnets today. We discovered that magnets stick to metal and that they either attract or repel one another. Attract means that they pull towards each other and repel means that they push apart from each other. There was no science homework today.
