Monday Stuff

I hope everyone had a great weekend.
Language Arts~
Music and then IMC this morning.  That means the kids were the 2nd class to go into the book fair.  I'm sure that they made a wish list.   The book fair is open Monday through Wednesday until 5. It will be open during Galaxy Gallery and on Friday.

We came back to class and took our spelling pretest.  We discussed our story vocabulary (skyscrapers, collage, barbecue, glorious, strutting, flicked and swarms) and vocabulary skill:  looking for a context clues in the descriptions of things.  We also discussed the comprehension skill of thinking about the characters.  We learn about characters by what they do and say.  We listened to the story:  "Me and Uncle Romie."

Our RIT words for the week include....
plot - the sequence of events in a story.
contrast - looking at the differences between two objects or ideas
metonymy - a type of metaphor in which something closely associated with a subject is substituted for it.  For example using the silver screen to refer to movies, the White House to refer to the president and the crown to stand for a king or queen.
job Announcement - written statements describing duties and responsibilities of a position.
editorial - an article giving opinions or perspectives.

There will be RIT word test on Thursday.  It will cover last week's worksheet, last week's words and this week's words.  Don't forget to study.

There is homework this week.

Math~
Today we reviewed for tomorrow's test.  The key concepts include that fractions, decimals, and percents can equal each other.  Percent means parts of 100.  You find a percent by either dividing the numerator by the denominator or by making an equivalent fraction with the denominator being 100.  Area and perimeter will be reviewed on the test.  Using parenthesis in math problems will also be reviewed.  No homework.

Science~
Today we reviewed last week's morning work about simple machines.  We also read about Thomas Edison and Louis Latimer.  No homework.
