Recess was sure cold out today! Please make sure that students are properly dressed for the weather! Jackets, hat, and gloves would have been useful today. It might be time to put the shorts away too. We go outside everyday unless the temperature or windchill is below 0 degrees.
Don't forget -
PBA day is on Thursday. School will begin 2 1/2 hours late.
Dazzle Craft Night is also on Thursday from 5:30-7:30
Language Arts
This week we are reading a humorous fiction story called "Dear Mr. Winston." Our comprehension skill is generating questions and using inferences. Our vocabulary for the week is as follows: weekdays, cardboard, slithered, genuine, apologize, harmless, and ambulance. Our vocabulary skill is base words. For example if we know what harm means we can figure out what harmless means. Our grammar skill of the week is figuring out when to use possessives and when to use plurals.
Fluency and Flow expectations.
I encourage all the students to take notes on their fluency and flow pages so they know what is expected of them.
Part 1. Read the story to an adult and have the adult sign the page.
Part 2. Answer the questions on page 265. Remember that I won't grade answers that aren't in complete sentences.
Part 3. Word Workout. Use the words to know in a paragraph. Sort the words to study by rhyming sounds. Some words don't have a rhyme and will be in their own group.
Part 4. Skill Sheet. Pick out one of the situations and write a humorous apology letter.
Part 5. (EXTRA CREDIT) Write an original letter to Mr. Winston apologizing for the snake incident.
Homework Part 2. We will be playing a 20 questions type game on Friday to practice the skill of generating questions. Each student will need to research facts about the animal of their choice. The facts need to be written down on the card that I have given them. They will become mini-experts and we will ask questions to figure out what kind of animal they chose.
Math
Today we learned the partial quotients method of division. It is a bit different then the long division that we learned. Students have SL 4.2 for homework. Encourage them to try it out using partial quotients and then if they want they can check using long division. I googled partial quotients and found a pretty good explanation. See the link below.
