March Monday

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

Don't forget that our parents are invited to a meeting with Mrs. Harper and other Discovery principals today at 7:00. The meeting will take place at Northpoint.

Language Arts
Today we started Unit 5. Our story is nonfiction. It is called the Spirit of Endurance. It tells the story of a ship and crew in Antarctica in the early 1900s. Our comprehension skill is problems and solutions. The crew faced many hardships after their boat fell apart. They did many things to solver their problems. Our vocabulary skill is word parts. Knowing the root, prefix, and suffix of a word can help us figure out what unfamiliar words mean. Our vocabulary words are frigid, treacherous, triumph, uninhabited, expedition, dismantled, and abandon. We also took our unit 4 test today and we visited the IMC. Many students found books on their states.

We also have RIT words this week:
Exposition - The background knowledge that an author gives you.
Object pronoun - The pronoun that receives the action of the subject. My parents waited to pick me up after school.
Primary Source - Something that was created by the person being researched. Or created at the same time as something being researched. For example: The Gettysburg Address is a primary source for someone researching Abraham Lincoln.
Theme - The overall message of a written work. It may also contain a life lesson.
Tragedy - A story with a sad ending or a great loss.

Math
Today we began reviewing for our chapter 8 test on Wednesday. Tomorrow we will continue to review. Problem of the week came home today. The strategy is guess and check. The key is to write down how many customers each cashier had in relation to Chuck. Add up those totals and see how close to 97 it is. Then adjust your guess for Chuck. POW is due on Friday.

Health
Today we read about eyes and ears. We learned how they work and how to protect them. We also did two worksheets. It looks like the test for health will be next Tuesday.
